Meet Renée Gapen

06 Mar 2019, by Kathleen Park in Be Heard Blog, Meet our Members, Member Profiles

Renée is a Communications and Engagement Partner at ResMed, where she provides internal comms and change management intervention. When she’s not sharpening her communications skills, you’ll find this Southern California native hiking with her family, playing word games or reading.

About Me

Birthplace: Covina, CA – I am a SoCal girl through and through. I have lived in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Orange and San Diego counties, and my running joke is that if I keep moving south I will end up in Mexico!

Current Residence: Lakeside, CA – San Diego has such a unique flare compared to other places in California where I have lived. Having travelled extensively in my work, I always feel a great sense of pride flying over San Diego, and then through our beautiful downtown right before touchdown.

IABC Member Since: 2018

Favorite Quote:
“Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials.” – Lin Yutang

When I’m not working, you could find me …
… hiking with my family, playing word games or reading.

Three words that best describe me:
Lover of meaning. In everything, I am drawn to hear the story that is being told. Whether it be a data set from my marketing days, a license plate that catches my eye in traffic, or my kids’ behavior, I’m constantly seeking to understand the meaning behind it all.

My Life in Communications

The biggest communications challenge I’ve faced …
I come from a Marketing and Learning & Development background, so I am still a bit new to the internal communications field. I am focusing on learning the ins and outs of my new position.

The most important communications or professional lesson I’ve learned is …
Repeat, repeat, repeat across channels and audiences! Recently one IABC member, Gretchen Griswold, told me that “a lot of it is demonstrating empathy, making sure that you’re keeping your employee hat on” and I have found this to be true. So true.

Resources that I really find useful and recommend to other communicators are …
Readable.io; Grammarly. I like that these tools can keep me honest when it comes to communicating via plain language. My organization is notorious for using tech and science jargon, which unnecessarily pushes readability into college level. I have also experimented with augmented writing using Textio.

I joined IABC because …
I’m hoping to accelerate my competence in the communications space.

You should know this about me …
I recently relocated from San Francisco to San Diego.
