With warmer weather on its way, you might be thinking about shaping up for the summer. Many of us pay for fitness classes or a gym membership, but sometimes we forget that our brains also need a workout.

Whatever your schedule, I encourage you to think of your IABC membership as a fitness center for your career. Whether it’s bouncing ideas off peers, making new connections or giving back to the community and the communications profession, IABC/San Diego has you covered. And, as with any membership, what you get out of it, depends on how much you put in.

One member who is committed to growth and development is our 2018 Communicator of the Year winner Margie Newman. Margie is founding partner and managing director of Intesa Communications Group, a full-service communications and government relations firm. From the moment she moved to San Diego in 2012, Margie has been actively engaged in the betterment of our city through strategic communications. Leveraging her influence on local boards and councils, she is a leader in cross-sector collaboration and communication, bringing together corporate, nonprofit and government leaders to shape new initiatives. Congratulations Margie!

If Margie’s achievements have inspired you, we have several upcoming events to help you get engaged in career development.

Next week, internal communicators can benefit from the meet-up of our special interest group. Open to any member, the April 10 meet up will be a forum for networking, idea sharing and problem solving.

On April 19, we are hosting our second  Gift of Communication event, giving members a chance to share their skills with local non-profits in need of communication advice. It’s such a rewarding experience to be able to make a difference in our community, while demonstrating how communicators add value to any enterprise.

If you’re not yet an IABC member, what are you waiting for? Join in April and you will get free admission to an upcoming IABC/San Diego event and will be entered to win a free course from the IABC Academy.

We look forward to connecting with you soon.
