To quote The Jam song, Start: “What you give is what you get.” It’s true with anything in life, including your membership with IABC. We’re working hard to provide you with lots of opportunities to connect with your peers, learn from award-winning communicators and to further your professional development.

If you’ve been thinking about getting more involved with the organization, now is the time! We are actively recruiting for our 2018-19 board term, which starts July 1. Several positions are open, giving our members the chance to serve San Diego’s communications community and be part of this award-winning chapter.

Joining the board has been an incredible learning opportunity for me, not to mention the friends I’ve made and the experiences I’ve had as a result. On May 23, Margie Newman, founding partner and managing director of Intesa Communications Group, will be sharing insights about the career accomplishments and challenges that led her to be recognized as 2018 IABC/San Diego Communicator of the Year. Tickets include a two-course dinner, a flight of beer, and unlimited soft drinks, tea and coffee.

I first met Margie soon after she moved to San Diego, and have watched the impact she has made in such a short amount of time. She’s a dynamic communicator that you don’t want to miss the chance to meet. Register here.

On June 20, Angela Sinickas, ABC, a globally recognized consultant on practical ways to measure the impact of communication on business results, will help us navigate “How to get Leaders to Listen to You.” Her session will share examples of how to gather research quickly and effectively to make yourself more credible when you advise your management team, how to improve listening skills and use the rule-of-three for probing questions when a leader first asks for help, and how to help your leadership feel the right solution has been agreed upon.
