President’s Letter – May 2019

05 May 2019, by Kathleen Park in IABC/SD News

It’s the merry month of May, and we’ve got some celebrating to do!

I’m delighted to announce IABC/San Diego’s Communicator of the Year (COTY)Mike Godfrey. Mike is an exceptional, experienced and well-rounded communicator who embodies all that this award honors. You can read more about Mike and our COTY Award criteria, below.

Please mark your calendar and join us in honoring Mike – and celebrate with other merry communications professionals – on May 22 at the IABC/SD COTY Award Dinner at the Karl Strauss Brewing Company in Sorrento Mesa.

In reflecting back on our present and past IABC/SD COTY winners, it’s clear to see what they have in common: They dare to be different. To take risks and lead the way. And to relentlessly look for new ways to add value and elevate the strategic importance of communications in the organizations, companies and causes they serve.

Our 2014 COTY Award winner Cason Lane, of Cason Lane Strategic Communications, summed up these aspirations very well:

“I used to be all about creating the very best publication, speech or communications plan. Those things are still very important, but today, when everyone is a communicator, these skills are becoming table stakes. How can we use communications to improve performance of the business? What sets us apart from other communicators throughout the enterprise? These are the kinds of questions I try to answer in my work every day.”

If you’re inspired to build your leadership skills, take risks in a safe and supportive environment, and make your mark on the local communications scene, we are actively recruiting for our 2019-20 board term, which starts July 1.

Joining the board has been an incredible learning opportunity for me, not to mention the friends I’ve made and the experiences I’ve had as a result. If you are interested in volunteering to serve, please contact me directly and I’d be happy to provide more information.

Let’s party!
