President’s Letter – September 2018

06 Sep 2018, by Kathleen Park in IABC/SD News

There’s something about the first week of September that’s a bit … well … challenging.

When I lived in France, each year at this time I got to experience what the French call La Rentrée (the return). It was the week that my fellow Parisians started wearing black again. You might think this was due to mourning the end of their month-long August holiday (and you wouldn’t be wrong). But La Rentrée also signals a return to the reality of life, which means socks and suits, as well as a renewed sense of purpose after enjoying some quality time off.

For most professional communicators around the world, September presents us with an additional reality: turning our focus to building next year’s communication plan, budget and calendar.

Are you ready?

To ensure you have what you need for jumping into these planning and negotiation processes with ease and confidence, I suggest the following three-part preparation checklist:

  1. Make sure your IABC membership is current. That way, you can fully tap into IABC’s global network and professional development tools, including the new Online Hub.
  2. Attend the free-to-members webinar on September 24: “The Five-step COMMS Plan: A simple, powerful approach for communication planning that achieves outcomes.” This model will provide communicators with a scalable approach for every communication situation.
  3. Join us after work on September 26 for the IABC/San Diego BrewhahaAt this multisensory event, you will learn the secrets behind Ballast Point’s success from one of its top brew masters while sampling some of the country’s finest beers and enjoying the company of fellow communicators. (Yay September!)

And for those who have also recently stepped into a new role – or may be soon – we’re organizing a Special Interest Group (SIG), just for you. Over coffee on the morning of October 4, we’ll discuss overcoming job-transition challenges and learn success strategies from each other. Our SIGs are free to IABC/SD members and are a fun and efficient way to gain valuable insights that can make a big difference in your career.

Finally, thanks to those who attended our Summer Social last month at the Wine Pub on Shelter Island. It was a full house and a fun gathering! Click here to see photos from the event.

Whatever you have going on in September, the IABC/SD Board and I wish you a smooth “return to reality.” And we hope to see you soon!
