Social media’s rise over the past 10 years has been steady and difficult—for some.  It has challenged individuals, businesses and communicators to broaden their thinking to reach the digital generation, who voraciously hunger for information. More than ever, people are turning to Twitter, Facebook and other social media sources to learn about what’s happening in the world.

I, like many others, jumped into the social media waters early and, before long, was swimming among the digitally savvy masses. I created my first social media profile on the now arguably antiquated MySpace. Little did I know what a game changer it would become in how I communicated. With a few simple clicks, I connected with friends, updated my relationship for all to see, explored popular new music and so much more. This one-stop outlet allowed me to express my opinion and share my life with those select “followers.” What was once a novelty has now transformed into a way of life, a hobby and a part of my career that I truly enjoy.

So during February – the month of love – challenge yourself to explore a new social media tool with an open mind. Maybe it won’t end up being useful in your career or personal life, but take a leap into the social media pond to see what you find. Who knows, you might just love what you discover from a new social media tool.
