I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.
Three words that best describe me:
Energetic, Active, Motivated
When I’m not working, you could find me…
Teaching aerobics; volunteering; Tweeting (@angierobert); running; cheering on San Diego State University — athletics, academics or anything there in between (Go Aztecs!!); teaching marketing and communications at the University of Phoenix; spending time with my husband, Scott; playing with my dogs, Gary and Patrick.
My Life in Communications
The biggest communications challenge I have faced…
My biggest challenge is also one of my favorite accomplishments. My senior year at SDSU, I got an internship at a major PR firm here in town. I interned there for 10 months. I remember it as a time when everything was new and I constantly felt like an awkward idiot(I should add that it was not because the team made me feel that way; it was my own insecurity).
After ten months of interning, they offered me a full-time position … my first “real” job out of college! It has been nearly a decade since that moment, but that challenge is still one of my favorite professional achievements.
I will always be grateful for that opportunity as it laid a solid foundation for my entire career.
A tip to students – get an internship! The experience is invaluable.
My favorite communications memory is…
At my last company, the team and I created a month-long educational/awareness event to enhance branding and drive new customer acquisition. The event, now in its fifth year, quadrupled in size and has become one of the industry’s marquee events held annually.
The most important communications or professional lesson I’ve learned is…
When given an opportunity, always say “yes” no matter how trivial it may be. You never know what that opportunity will lead to, who you will meet along the way and what you will learn.
Resources that I really find useful and recommend to other communicators are…
My solid network of communications professionals is my top resource. The collective knowledge and professional connections of these people far exceed any book or website available. My network has given me advice, feedback and fresh insight on projects. Plus, they are a great resource to learn of new opportunities. No matter what industry you are in, don’t forget to build your network.
Other resources I rely upon quite regularly are IABC, the AP Style Book, mashable.com, PRSA, American Marketing Association and LinkedIN.
You should know this about me…
I can’t sit still and tend to always be busy. I’m always connected … via e-mail, instant message, phone and social media. I like to get to know people and to forge strong personal connections with them. I would love to connect with you as well, if we haven’t already. Please feel free to drop me a line.
