“How do you go from where you are to where you want to be? I think you have to have an enthusiasm for life. You have to have a dream, a goal, and you have to be willing to work for it.” ~ Jim Valvano
Three words that best describe me:
Loyal, outgoing, witty.
When I’m not working, you could find me…
Spending time with my family, preferably at the beach.
My Life in Communications
The biggest communications challenge I have faced…
In a two year span, I had to manage communications for my division as our company made a large acquisition, underwent re-branding, and then was spun off by our parent company. As you can imagine, there were a few communication needs there!
My favorite communications memory is…
There have been a few, but it probably has to be one of the earliest: the first time I saw my byline, above the fold, on the front page of the paper I was working for. I bought a copy right out of the machine even though I could have picked up copies at the office for free!
The most important communications or professional lesson I’ve learned is…
You have to put yourself in your audience’s position; if you don’t know why they feel what they care about, and how they will react to what you’re telling them, your message will totally miss the mark.
The most valuable thing about my membership with IABC is…
Making connections with peers in the communications community. It’s a small community, at least locally, and it’s extremely helpful to know others who share the same role, challenges, and aspirations.
You should know this about me…
I can never find my keys or my wallet, but ask me about an obscure song from the 80s or an episode of Seinfeld and I’ll know the answer right away.
