“Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.” – Benjamin Franklin
Three words that best describe me:
Driven, empathetic, positive.
When I’m not working, you could find me…
Drinking wine, trying new restaurants, traveling, reading for my book club, running at the beach, or volunteering with the Red Cross.
My Life in Communications
The biggest communications challenge I have faced…
Developing and launching a comprehensive communications campaign to consumers that required input and buy-in from executives, clinicians, physicians, and support staff in multiple departments across the organization…on a tight deadline. It was a good reminder to breathe deeply.
My favorite communications memory is…
Getting a phone call from a C-suite executive while she was at a conference thanking me profusely for creating materials for her speaking engagement. I built her workshop around a brand new presentation tool, and it was the first time she had used it in front of an audience. She was so thrilled with the result that she called me right away, and her excitement and enthusiasm about the outcome made all the long nights of preparation worth it.
The most important communications or professional lesson I’ve learned is…
It isn’t enough to identify a problem; you also have to find a solution. It’s easy for people to see the things that aren’t going well, but it is far harder and more valuable to fix those problems than just talk about them.
The most valuable thing about my membership with IABC is…
So far, everyone I’ve met has been friendly, encouraging and very knowledgeable about the communications industry. I enjoy spending time with people who are in the same field, facing the same challenges and trying new things.
Resources that I really find useful and recommend to other communicators are…
Twitter – I never thought I would say that, but I’ve found that it is a great way to connect to new people and ideas and get breaking news. “The Writer’s Block” – It is a 3″ x 3″ x 3″ book of pictures, words, quotes and advice that are meant to spark your creativity if (when) you get stuck on something. www.hubspot.com and Google Analytics.
You should know this about me…
I am a breaking news junkie; it started when I was very young, and it accelerated when I worked as a reporter for my college newspaper. If I hadn’t gone into communications, I would be a detective. I love everything involving mysteries, and Agatha Christie is one of my favorite authors. My family works in the wine industry and they’ve taught me a lot, so I welcome any and all wine recommendations.
