My Life in Communications

The biggest communications challenge I have faced…
Some of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in my career, as I’m sure many have, are working with those who do not see the value that communications provides. Learning to quantify results and provide metrics for communications initiatives are tools that will serve any communicator well.

My favorite communications memory is…
One of my favorite communications-related memories has to be when I was given the opportunity to create an entire communications program – including all internal and external communications efforts from scratch. It is something that benefits the company, it’s associates and customers while also achieving personal gratification as well. Another memory I won’t soon forget is winning my first Gold Quill – that was pretty special.

The most important communications or professional lesson I’ve learned is…
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to be prepared and have an agenda (even if only in your head) for every meeting you walk into, but always keep your mind open.

Resources that I really find useful and recommend to other communicators are…
Use your network. I so appreciate being able to tap my colleagues at work, through IABC, or in the community for their thoughts and feedback. Other resources are IABC, LinkedIN, Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg, TED Talks (for creative inspiration), AP Stylebook, and I’m sure there are others I am missing!

The most valuable thing about my membership with IABC is…
I’ve appreciated being able to connect with and learn from other communicators.

You should know this about me…
Champagne, chocolate and a good workout. Not necessarily in that order, but all are incredibly necessary in life.
