President’s Letter – April 2014

KateHomeIt’s Spring Break, and while many students are enjoying time off from learning, it’s a great time of year for professionals to think about their development. All too often we get caught up in the day-to-day without devoting time to continued learning.

At a recent IABC conference, one of our regional leaders made a point that many of us pay for gym or health club memberships and that we should think of IABC as a fitness center for our careers. It’s a great analogy and one that adheres to the adage that you only get out as much as you put in.

Whatever your schedule, let’s make the time to give our brains a workout. Whether it’s bouncing ideas off peers, making new connections or attending a more formal learning experience, IABC/San Diego has you covered.

This week, internal communicators can benefit from the first meet-up of our new special interest group. Open to any member, the meeting will be a forum for idea sharing and problem solving.

Next week, we have a fun learning and networking event with our chapter’s Communicator of the Year. Cason Lane, ABC, will be sharing award-winning insights, while attendees get to sample award-winning food.

On May 6, IABC/San Diego board member and PR pro Margie Newman, will be presenting a webinar on how to manage up effectively. This is learning at its easiest, right from your desk, and it’s free to members. No excuses!

And, on May 22, we are hosting our second Speed Networking event. We are partnering with Ad2 San Diego, the San Diego American Marketing Association and the San Diego Press Club to give you exposure to the top communicators in our region. You are guaranteed to leave with at least 10 new contacts. This is one you don’t want to miss.

Here’s hoping this line up puts some spring in your professional step.

Until next time,

Kate Hardman, ABC
President, IABC/San Diego
