This is a time of year to reflect on what we have and think about helping others.

I’m fortunate to have had a lot of support throughout my career, from family, from friends and from some of the outstanding people I’ve been lucky enough to work with.

One of the reasons I got involved with the IABC/San Diego board is because it’s important to me to pay it forward. I want to help the communications profession thrive and to help raise the profile of communicators in business. I’m grateful for the network IABC has given me access to, and I want to encourage other people to get involved so they, too, can experience the benefits of being connected to this fantastic group of people. It’s so valuable to be able to get together with people who understand the challenges you face in your job, share best practices and work through solutions.

If you want to expand your network, there’s no better place to do it than at Mingle Bells on December 7. It’s the annual can’t-miss holiday event with your chance to get in the holiday spirit with 500 marcomm professionals from across the industry.

Engaging with the community can be equally rewarding and there are many organizations that need our support. Non-profits often run lean and do not have the funds to focus on communication. Through IABC’s “Gift of Communication” program, we can connect our members with some of these organizations and help them to navigate their communication challenges. IABC/San Diego’s Gift of Communication event is planned for February – read more about the program and register your interest.

Thinking about how you can help others may also inspire you to thank and recognize those who have been an example in your life. Nominations open in January for our Communicator and Junior Communicator of the Year Awards. The awards recognize a greater San Diego area-based leader who demonstrates strategic excellence in communication and serves as an outstanding example to others through their quality of work and contributions to the communication profession. It’s not too early to start thinking about nominations. Learn more about the program.

As I close for this month, I’d like to give a big thanks to my incredible board. Their efforts enable our chapter to do more and achieve more. I’m grateful for their support.

Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving,

Kate Griffin, ABC
