Several years ago, I attended my first IABC event…solo. I arrived early, affixed a “Hello, my name is” sticker to my business casual attire and shared that I was new and wasn’t quite sure what to expect.
It was the annual Communicator of the Year Award reception and the guest of honor, a highly distinguished IABC member, mingled with members sharing stories from her impressive career.
I was quickly greeted by two board members who welcomed me by providing an overview of the organization, asking about my background and interests, and taking care to introduce me to other members so I wasn’t alone. Before long, I was so engrossed in conversation that I had to be ushered to my seat so the awards ceremony could begin – talk about making a first impression!
Needless to say, I found a community in IABC that evening and since then, I have met friends, colleagues, mentors and mentees, and formed relationships that have helped me grow both personally and professionally.
Connections are important. IABC membership allows you to tap into a supportive community of fellow communicators who will challenge the way you think, offer new perspectives, and celebrate the work you do.
Why not give it a shot? After all, you’re only the “new kid” once – take it from me.
We hope that you will join us on Wednesday, February 23 from 4:45-6 p.m. PT for informal virtual networking and a presentation from Emmy Award-winning guest speaker Katy Temple on “How to Build Executive Presence through Storytelling and Engagement.”
As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out and stay tuned for a return to in-person event this spring!
