We ❤️ our members!
While it’s cliche to say that the most important part of an organization is its membership, we’ve both experienced firsthand how true the statement is with IABC. We’ve met incredible people through this organization: inspirational communicators, passionate philanthropists, diverse thinkers, good humans, and lifelong friends. We sincerely love the people who make up IABC!
This month, we challenge you to focus on connecting with other members. If you don’t know anyone else, shoot us an email! Seriously, we’d love to grab a drink and get to know you better. If you’re connected to what’s happening, being intentional in your relationships, and exploring what the chapter and larger organization have to offer, there’s no doubt you’ll find value in being an IABC member for a very long time.
For the past few months, we’ve been highlighting member benefits in our newsletters. In November we overviewed certification and in December Shared Interest Groups. This month, we focus on volunteering. There are so many ways for you to get involved - some of which only require an hour or two and others that span a full year.
From our Gift of Communication event on Thursday, February 16, where volunteers will spend 90 minutes helping local nonprofits amp up their communication efforts (there’s still time to register!) to becoming a board member (see below for our March training), there’s a role for you! Whatever your interest level, we hope you consider donating your time and talents back to the profession. We guarantee that when you do, you’ll get more back than you give. We’d be happy to chat with you to understand what fits your availability and interests. Just reach out!
Finally, we’re scoping our programming and other member offerings based on your feedback, so let us know how we’re doing by completing a two-minute survey. Your responses will help us coordinate guest speakers, events, and event locations tailored to your interests and industries.
If you have questions or suggestions, we’d love to chat with you!

We aim to provide our valued members unique opportunities for networking, career advancement, professional development, and everything in between. If you haven’t already, please take our two-minute survey. Responses will help us coordinate guest speakers and events tailored to your interests and industries. Thank you in advance for your participation!

Volunteering with IABC/San Diego means you’ll be giving time to a worthwhile cause while also growing as a communicator and strengthening relationships with other local professionals. No matter your availability and interest level, there’s sure to be a role for you!
Start small by giving 90 minutes to a local nonprofit. Our Gift of Communication event on Thursday, February 16, pairs volunteers with nonprofits so they can offer expert counsel on the organization’s communication efforts. If you haven’t yet signed up, there’s still time to register! If you can’t make this week but are still interested in dipping your toes in the water by helping out with something small, we have communication, membership, and event opportunities all year long.
If you want to do more, our board is looking for a secretary and a treasurer. Both of these roles are great for first time board members. The responsibilities require less time than other board roles while offering exposure to the inner workings of board life. The secretary is our administrative guru who keeps records of all chapter proceedings (meeting agendas, minutes, bylaws, policies, procedures, etc.) while the treasurer is our chief financial officer who handles everything numbers-related (budgets, forecasts, bank records, receipts, etc.). If your sights are set on larger board roles, or IABC Pacific Plains Region or IABC International roles, our upcoming board training might be the next step. Watch for details in the next few weeks.
Whatever your interest level, we’d love to have you volunteer!
